Pocket galleries
When I found out how many projector slides were at Art Scraps, the local art supply reuse store, I was impressed. And when I saw that some appeared to be an art history professor and classics professor’s old collection, I had an idea. My pocket galleries are small accordion books, each page offering a window…
Marbled sampler
I learned to marble paper many months ago, and while it was a very enjoyable class, it left me with just as many examples of what not to do as what to do, and only a couple pages I liked. Still, it was a substantial stack, so I decided to bind samples together and note…
Ties that bind
This art book is an edition of two, made for my mother and I. The text is from the hymn “Blest be the ties that bind,” a favorite of mine in childhood.
Variations on a square theme
The best way to learn something is to do it over and over again, and I’m learning printing. I’ve made a basic three-square pattern, and printed it on garments, paper, and cloth. Even within such a basic framework, the variation available by using different methods and inks is significant. And by printing my own materials,…
Maps trio
This series explores geography by using recycled atlas pages within three miniature books. Several traditional binding methods are used, and the blank pages within 2 and 3 offer readers an opportunity to add their own records of place and travel. From smallest to largest, Maps 1 uses a Turkish map fold within hardcovers and a…
Gum book
A packet of gum, chewed, the remainder sewn into a book involving gum origin facts and a quote from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Handmade, April 2023.
Necessary supplies
This accordion book was made on the theme of “art supplies” for the areyoubookenough challenge on Instagram in March of 2023. The two hardcovers are covered in magazine photos, and the accordion itself has illustrations of my bookbinding tools on one side, and a quote by Alexander Berkman on the other. I’ve been amazed as…
Sewn ribbon hardback
In February, I took a bookbinding course with Frank Hurley at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, and we learned how to sew signatures onto tape as an internal step for making hardcover books. I thought making this ornamental would be pretty, and allow a lot of flexibility in the spine, resulting in a book…
Cheese book
The book described is an edible one, handmade in March 2023 from marbled colby jack cheese. The binding used are strings from celery, making the book mostly edible save for the needle used in the process, which was removed before consumption.
Drawstring coil book
An experiment with a coil book, beaded.
